Nan Guan Resort and Winery: Design
PROGRAM: Resort
CLIENT: Fang Shan Development Company
SIZE: 14,000 m2
STATUS: Construction complete 2021
LOCATION: Nan Guan Village, Fang Shan County, Beijing
The site is in a valley to the west of central Beijing. The client asked for a resort design that was about 20% winery and the remaining
space for a variety of functions
including hotel, recreation, restaurant, meetings and events.
The site is hilly and divided by a gully that occasionally sees water. The winery is an “L-shaped ” building at the smaller, lower part of the site, on one side of the gully.
The remaining buildings are across the gully on the higher part of the site.
The footprint of the buildings follows the counter lines so none of the volumes are orthogonal. Walls rising from irregular plans result in sloping roofs with
irregular roof-lines. The undulating roof echoes the rolling hills that surround the resort. The upper part of the site is connected by a long outdoor terrace.
The materials palette is limited to clay roof tiles and walls of local slate.
